Pictures of the Week: Dec. 30 - Jan. 5

Wow, what a great way to start the new year. Every photo in this week's gallery was just as compelling as the next. I'd like to say that I'm responsible for putting together such a fine collection of images, but that wouldn't be entirely true. You see, as far as I'm concerned, the photos select themselves.

Every day I wade though hundreds of news photos in order to assemble a photo gallery of the week's best. Ideally, compelling images of the week's main news events make an appearance, but not always. Sometimes the week's key events are just not visually compelling enough. Sometimes the most mundane act possesses that quality that makes it scream for attention ... and inclusion in the Pictures of the Week gallery. This week, however, was a perfect blend. There were images of news events that not only captured the essence of the moment, but also alluded to the larger context of the event. The photo of Nancy Pelosi flexing her political muscle for example. Simple acts also proved themselves compelling as seen in the seemingly choreographed image of the sweepers in Tiananmen Square.

The point is, that it is the photograph that selects itself. The photos that appear each week stand out almost immediately. That grab my eye and scream, "Look at me!" Sometimes they are beautiful, sometimes they are difficult to look at. Regardless, they are always compelling.

All the best for the New Year.
