Warning: The photograph below in this blog entry is graphic. If you are easily offended by violent images, do not scroll down the page.
The photograph below breaks my heart. When I first saw this image, I thought it was a photo of a child injured by violence in a war zone as he reaches for his mother. Sadly the image is far more grim.
The photo depicts a mother grieving for her six-year-old son, Dhiya Thamer, who was killed when their family car came under fire by unknown gunmen in Baqouba, capital of Iraq's Diyala province. The family was returning from enrolling Dhiya in school, where he was to begin his first year.
A mother should never have to suffer such a loss, going to or from school should never be that dangerous, and innocent civilians should not come under attack.
For the rest of this week's compelling photography from around the world, go to: Pictures of the Week.

I sincerely hope that all members of our government, especially Bush, sees this hpoto. It speaks a thousand words........
Sharon533whatever.....do you really think President Bush did this? omg, that is a stretch. It's called war Sharon and it reminds us that we need to get on our knees and thank God for the freedoms we have here in the USA. And then thank all our brave military men and women for their service to help us keep them and help aquire them for others. Forget your politics lady and open your eyes, lest it be you or I holding our baby that way.
I'm shocked that there was no warning that as I was flipping through "photos of the week" a photo of a dead 6 year old was included. While tragic, can't some sort of screening occur before I go through these with my 3 year old? Come on now....
if you paid close attention to the photo of the week before you clicked on it told you that the photo was very grahic and if you could not handle it dont click on it.What a sad picture we should pray for these people losing a child is very hard and you never get over it is always the innocent that die and for what.
Sharon be real...
May God forgive the stupidity of mankind.
It's really sad that people like arlamaeman and ccigale1234 don't see WE are responsible for OUR actions. Neither God nor Allah control the hands of a man (or woman) who fires a gun.
You say "do you really think President Bush did this?"... yes he did. The smartest move, at this point, would be to get the hell out of Iraq. And it's HIS decision to make.
"It's called war and it reminds us that we need to get on our knees and thank God for the freedoms we have in the US." ... how about getting up and doing something instead? Procrastinating in a church will get you nowhere. What your God taught you, loving, helping, sharing, respecting... it's time to apply that in real life.
Your brave military men and women are realizing more and more every day that the war in Iraq is bull, that it's oil-driven, and the anti-war movement is just the start of regaining our humanity.
Forget politics, you say? How do you expect to have any impact on the world? Praying? Good luck. Open YOUR eyes!
