Pictures of the Week: May 17-23

Now this is about as close of a call as you ever want to get. An amazing set of pictures from Reuters photographer Goran Tomasevic, who was shooting pictures right next to a U.S. Marine engaged in a firefight, shows the Marine narrowly escaping death -- or at least what would have been an extremely serious wound. The Marine from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit was engaging Taliban fighters after they opened fire near Garmser in Afghanistan's Helmand Province May 18. The Marine was not injured.

We ran one photo from this series in our Pictures of the Week photo gallery, but I thought that showing these photos as a group would give a sense of just how close this Marine came to being hit, and how instantaneously and irrevocably things can change in combat. Luckily this Marine escaped with his life.

Take a look at all of this week's amazing images from around the world in our Pictures of the Week photo gallery.

Thank God we have brave men and women who will do this kind of insane work. Shame on all who don't appreciate-nor respect those who are always in harms way.

There is another guy behind him who also is not wearing his Kevlar. They are also not wearing any other gear which makes me assume they were attacked unexpectedly.

After spending 22 year in the US Army, I find it hard to believe anyone in combat would not have his gear close at hand in an obvious tactical environment.

Ultimately I have to question the legitimacy of this picture.

I also can not identify the weapon. There are many out there these days which I can not recognize however.

If legit, this Marine is a brave young man and this photographer is equally as brave for not even flinching and taking perfect shots as rounds are coming in within a few feet of him also.

On closer inspection I see it is an M16 and I also see in the last shot a third man with Kevlar and battle rattle on.  (He needs to hunker down with rounds that close coming in)

These guys must have been caught off guard. They were probably resting for night ops.

Certainly these are brave young men.

I take my first comment back...great pics and I suspect very legit.

I looked at the picture differently..

Can you picture out if the world was like this??it could have been better, not bitter if everybody is friendly regardless of race.
